OUR AIMS
Founded in August 2016, Liverpool Tritons is Merseyside’s first and only inclusive rugby club. Our Rugby Union side is for gay, straight, bisexual and trans men, and our Touch Rugby team is open to people of all genders, enabling us to serve the community even further. In the first two months of the Tritons, 16 players played their first ever games of rugby. Now we play in the IGR UK League (Northern Division) against other inclusive teams, and increasingly in friendly games against mainstream local clubs.
We aim to support LGBTQ+ people through enhancing their mental and physical well-being, fostering a beneficial and cohesive community and by tackling head-on social pre-conceptions of what it means to be gay, trans or bisexual. We offer a welcoming space for people from a range of backgrounds to feel safe being themselves in a sporting environment.
We train for two hours every Wednesday at New Brighton Rugby Club from 7pm.
Mens Rugby Union
Our Union team play games almost weekly from September to March against other gay & inclusive teams from across the UK and in friendly matches against local clubs. Since the 2017-18 season we have been part of the UK IGR League, where we compete against other inclusive clubs across the north of England, We are part of the Northern IGR League and Northern Development IGR League, both of these then lead into a UK Grand finals day seeing the top teams from the North of England playing against the top teams from the South to decide an overall UK winner and runner up from each league.
In addition we also participate in international tournaments which in 2023 saw the last Union Cup take place in Birmingham with clubs from all over Europe. Then in 2024 the last Bingham Cup which happened in Rome with clubs from around the world. The next Union Cup will take place in Oslo from 29th-1st June 2025 and Bingham Cup in Brisbane in 2026.
Mix Gender Touch
Our Touch team participate in a number of leagues/tournaments throughout the year, with them taking part in a series day/night playing on average 4/5 games at each one, we also have regular local joint training and friendlies sessions.
Through the summer months we compete as part of the IGR North Touch League which was launched in 2023 and play against other gay & inclusive teams from across the north of England. In 2024 we won the Division 2 title after an impressive run of wins at each of the 5 series days.
In Autumn and Winter we take part in the Chester Winter League and Liverpool City Region Touch League which sees us attend a number of series days across the region and in Chester.
As if that wasn't enough we also attend and take part in other one off tournaments and are looking forward to attending Hadrians, Touch my Brum and Pride in Touch in 2025.
Beyond rugby, we organise social events and team building activities – once our members join, the Tritons can become a huge part of their lives. The club welcomes both experienced players and new players of all fitness levels.
