OUR AIMS
Founded in August 2016, Liverpool Tritons is Merseyside’s first and only inclusive rugby club. Our Rugby Union side is for gay, straight, bisexual and trans men, and our Touch Rugby team is open to people of all genders, enabling us to serve the community even further. In the first two months of the Tritons, 16 players played their first ever games of rugby. Now we play in the IGR UK League (Northern Division) against other inclusive teams, and increasingly in friendly games against mainstream local clubs.
We aim to support LGBTQ+ people through enhancing their mental and physical well-being, fostering a beneficial and cohesive community and by tackling head-on social pre-conceptions of what it means to be gay, trans or bisexual. We offer a welcoming space for people from a range of backgrounds to feel safe being themselves in a sporting environment.
We train for two hours every Wednesday at Jericho Lane Football Hub from 7pm and play games approximately fortnightly against other gay & inclusive teams from across the UK and in friendly matches against local clubs. The 2017-18 season saw the start of the IGR League Cup, where we compete against other inclusive clubs, and last season we finished in third place out of seven teams. This year we were on track to better that result and you could be part of that aim.
2019 saw the last Union Cup take place in Dublin with clubs from all over Europe and we won silver medals in our tier. Following delays from the COVID-19 pandemic, the next Union Cup will take place in Birmingham from 27th-30th April 2023.
Beyond rugby, we organise social events and team building activities – once our members join, the Tritons can become a huge part of their lives. The club welcomes both experienced players and new players of all fitness levels.
